乙二胺四乙酸（EDTA）可能是工业和医疗中最常用的金属离子探针。广泛用于检测金属离子，如镍、钴、铁、亚铁、汞、铅等金属离子和钙、镁等金属离子。在被EDTA结合成金属络合物后，金属离子通常表现为可反应性降低。EDTA对活细胞不具有渗透性。乙二胺四乙酸乙酯是乙二胺四乙酸的细胞渗透性衍生物。活细胞通过与细胞膜渗透的EDTA-AM酯孵育，被动地负载EDTA-AM。一旦内化，胞浆酯酶会分解AM酯，释放出活性的四羧酸配体EDTA，EDTA会隔离细胞内的金属离子。例如，它可用于分离胞质钙离子以研究胞质钙离子的作用，也可用于分离重金属污染物或抑制需要二价阳离子活性的金属酶和金属蛋白酶。
