A gene cluster involved in the biosynthesis of novel polyketide antibiotics: stambomycins A, B, C, And D is identified Streptomyces ambofaciens. The antibiotics are purified and characterized for use in the treatment of infection. The stambomycin biosynthetic gene cluster was identified as one of several clusters in the terminal region of the S. ambofaciens chromosome.
